It was built in the Jiaqing period ofthe Qing Dynasty, facing south from the north, with green tiles, pink walls, brick and wood structure. It is a typical deep courtyard in the south of theYangtze River. In 1918, the house, together with the herb garden behind it, wassold to Zhu, a neighbor in the East. After the change of ownership, most of theoriginal houses have been demolished and rebuilt, but the main part of Lu Xunsformer residence is fortunately preserved, so today we are lucky to see theoriginal Lu Xuns former residence.
These two black stone storehouse gates were originally the side gates ofZhou Jiaxins gate, where Lu Xuns family went in and out.
This ordinary mud flat house is the place where Lu Xuns family used toplace vehicles. As we all know, Shaoxing is known as "Venice of the East".Therefore, most families are equipped with water transportation. From the right door, through the corridor, to the "sweet scented osmanthushall". Mingtang is commonly known as Tianjing in Shaoxing. There used to be twolush osmanthus plants planted here, hence the name of Osmanthus Mingtang. WhenLu Xun was a child, he used to lie on a small table under the osmanthus tree insummer to enjoy the cool. His stepgrandmother Jiang, while shaking a banana fan, played riddles for Lu Xun and told stories such as "cat is the master of thetiger" and "water overflows the Golden Mountain". Lu Xun was influenced by folkliterature since childhood and provided rich materials for his later literarycreation. Later, he had vivid memories in his articles such as dog, cat, mouseand on the collapse of Leifeng Pagoda.
Through the sweet scented osmanthus hall, you come to Lu Xuns bedroom. Inthe summer of 1909, Lu Xun returned to his hometown from Hangzhou after studyingin Japan. He successively held teaching posts in Shaoxing Fuzhong school andShanhui Junior Normal School. This bedroom was his bedroom and study when he wasteaching in Shao. Lu Xun often prepared lessons and wrote late into the night. His first classical Chinese novel nostalgia was written here. The iron pearwooden bed on display in the bedroom is the original of that year.
Through the slate patio, facing is the well preserved two floors and twobottoms of Lu Xuns former residence. The first half of Dongshou is the mainplace for Lu Xuns family to eat and meet guests. After that, he was so sickthat he was mistaken by a quack doctor that he died at the age of 36. From thenon, Lu Xuns family fell into predicament from a well-off family. After a seriesof family changes, young Lu Xun suffered from the coldness and coldness of theworld. He saw the degeneration and ugliness of the upper class society, whichhad a great impact on his thought and embarked on the road of seeking truth.
Separated from the living room is Lu Xuns mothers room. The Eight Leggedbed in the south is the original one that Lu Xuns mother, Lu Rui, had slept in.The little bed in the East is the bed that Lu Xuns brother ZHOU Jianren used tosleep in.
On the table by the window are displayed the things that Lu Xuns motherused to do needlework. Lu Rui, Lu Xuns mother, was born in anqiaotou, Shaoxing. She was kind and resolute. She was able to read books through self-study. Lu Xunadmired his mother and once said, "if my mother is 20 or 30 years younger, shemay become a heroine." Luri is indeed an extraordinary mother. Her three sonsare known as "the three heroes of the Zhou family" in the modern literaryworld.
To the west of the small hall is Lu Xuns stepgrandmother Jiangs bedroom.Lu Xun was deeply impressed by the stepgrandmother, who was cheerful andhumorous, and often told stories and riddles to his nephews andgrandchildren.
A patio away from Luruis bedroom is the kitchen where Lu Xuns familycooks and cooks. In front of the kitchen, the "three eye stove" used by the oldrich family in Shaoxing was restored according to the memories of the peopleconcerned. Pictures and words praying for blessings and avoiding evil spiritswere painted on the walls of the stove. The kitchen cover on the north wall wasmade by Zhang Fuqing, the "busy month" of Lu Xuns family. Zhang Fuqingsometimes brought his son to carry water for help, and became a close friendwith Lu Xun. Lu Xun and Yunshui met for the first time in this kitchen. "Purpleround face, wearing a small felt hat and a bright silver collar around hisneck", it was this water transportation that made Lu Xun realize a strange worldthat he could not see in books. In 1921, when Lu Xun wrote his novel hometown,he took water transportation as a model and created the vivid artistic image of"leap soil".
The three rooms in the back are where Lu Xuns family stores rice and farmtools. The one on the right is Zhang Fuqings residence. In the middle is thecorridor leading to BaiCaoYuan.
Ladies and gentlemen, now we can see that this garden is the famous"BaiCaoYuan". Although the name of BaiCaoYuan is elegant, it is actually anordinary vegetable garden. It was a deserted vegetable garden shared by morethan a dozen families in xintaimen at that time. Usually, some melons andvegetables were planted for drying rice in autumn. In his childhood, Lu Xunoften played with his friends in the herb garden, enjoying the cool in the shadeof trees in summer and catching crickets in the mud wall in autumn. In winter,we catch birds in the snow. As for BaiCaoYuan, Lu Xun once described it vividlyin his famous prose from BaiCaoYuan to Sanwei bookstore. In the article, hewrote with infinite affection: "it is not necessary to say the green vegetablebeds.
Smooth stone well fence, tall acacia tree, purple mulberry Just around theshort mud wall, there is infinite interest. " What we see now is the landscapein Lu Xuns works. When Lu Xun was 12 years old, his family sent him to Sanweibookstore to study. He had to say goodbye to his crickets, raspberries andMulian, and went to the most severe private school in the city to study. Nowlets say goodbye to everything here and follow Lu Xuns article from BaiCaoYuanto Sanwei bookstore.
From Lu Xuns former residence, walking hundreds of steps to the East, walking south through a stone bridge, and entering through a black paintedbamboo silk door, you will arrive at Sanwei bookstore, where Lu Xun studied inhis youth. Sanwei bookstore is a famous private school in Shaoxing City in thelate Qing Dynasty. It used to be the study of Shou family. Lu Xun began to studyhere at the age of 12. His five-year study career benefited him a lot, accumulated rich cultural knowledge, and laid a very solid foundation for hisfuture literary creation.
The plaque of "Sanwei bookstore" is hanging in the middle of the library, and there is a pair of clasps on both sides of the pillars: "music is silent, filial piety is the only thing; Taitang flavor is poetry." They were all writtenby Liang Tongshu, a famous calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty. What is "threeflavors?" according to Mr. Shou Jingwus son: "reading classics tastes likerice, reading history tastes like food, and a hundred schools of thought tastelike vinegar." Among them, acyl is condiment. There is a picture of pine anddeer hanging under the plaque. Every day, students should salute the plaque andthe picture before they start reading.

hua shan is the highest of china’s five sacred mountains. it is 120 kilometers east of xian. it has five peaks that resemble the petals of a flower. the highest peak is 2180 meters (7085 feet).
we had had discussions about going to hua shan with some graduate students from computer science. that didn’t work out due to changes in schedules on both sides. also, they were planning to do the climb at night to be able to reach the peak at sunrise. that did not appeal to us. we wanted to spend a night on the mountain. fran’s department arranged a trip for us, making reservations at the simple hotel on the north peak. they sent two graduate students to accompany us, though they had not been to hua shan before. we met them at 8:00 on saturday morning and took a taxi to the train station. there we asked around and located a mini-bus. the bus made a couple of stops. one was to see a presentation about the traditional medicines grown on the mountain and a chance to buy some of them. it probably would have been interesting if we understood chinese. our guides gave us the general outline about what was said. the other stop was a quick lunch stop.
there are two approaches to hua shan. [chinese proverb: “there is one road and only one road to hua shan,” meaning that sometimes the hard way is the only way.] the west entrance involves 10 kilometers of walking on a road before you start climbing. we went with the east entrance, where the bus brings you to the base of a cable car that goes up to the 1500 meter north peak. our plan was to walk up to the north peak, then climb to the four other peaks the next day and take the cable car down.
we started the climb in the early afternoon. the path consists of stone steps with rough chain link handrails in the narrowest areas (we wore our bicycling gloves for hand protection). physically, it is more like climbing the steps of a skyscraper than trails at home. however, the temperature was about 95 degrees and there was not much shade. we brought lots of water, including some bottles that we froze and some gatorade that we got at the fancy department store in downtown xian. there are plenty of refreshment stands along the way where you can buy bottled water, the chinese equivalent of gatorade, and other drinks or snacks at a premium price.
we reached the north peak before 4:00 pm and rested at the hotel. our room was basic, but comfortable and clean enough. because water is scarce on the mountain, there were neither showers nor sinks available for washing. in that sense the experience felt like camping, but we were sleeping in a big tent!
after dinner at the hotel restaurant, we spent some time talking with our guides. we were a bit surprised to find that they both think of japan negatively, but like the u.s. it seems that japan’s wwii behavior in china has not been forgotten, and is emphasized in school.
we saw a beautiful sunset and watched the sky become resplendent with thousands of stars, including the milky way galaxy. this was the clearest sky that we have seen in china. the fresh air at hua shan is a treat!
our guides had both been planning to get up at 4:00 am to watch the sunrise. fran and i made sleep a priority. we did happen to wake up a bit before sunrise (our room faced east) and went outside to watch the sky become rosy. ironically, our guides missed the sunrise because they had stayed up late watching the european soccer championships on the television in their room
the plan for the day was to climb the other four peaks, but we reserved the right to shorten the route. the first part was a steep climb to middle peak. after the low north peak, all the others are at roughly meters. there were crowds on the way to middle peak – mostly chinese hikers but we did see a few other wai guo (foreigners) as well.
we visited two taoist temples en route to middle peak. each one had an altar with incense and offerings of fruit. the friendly monks invited us to say a prayer or to send blessings to loved ones. fran accepted their invitation. at the first temple, she lit incense sticks and knelt on a cushion in front of the altar saying a silent prayer for our safe journey to the various summits of hua shan (the prayer was answered). at the second temple, she knelt on a cushion in front of the altar and sent silent blessings to several friends who are experiencing challenging situations in their lives at present. after each blessing, she leaned forward and the monk struck a drum.
after middle peak, the crowds got much thinner. the next was east peak, which had a steep ladder climbing rock. fran was dubious about this ascent, but realized that the ladder wasn’t so bad and went for it. that was a good decision because we were then able to do a loop and the trails got almost empty at this point. after skirting the top of a cliff with a steep dropoff on both sides, we had a pleasant walk to south peak and west peak. there was even a small amount of dirt trail! the summit of south peak was the highest point on hua shan, so of course we asked another hiker to take a photo of our guides and us. the views from the tops of each peak were beautiful. hua shan and the surrounding mountains are very rugged and remind us somewhat of hiking in the southwestern united states or the sierras.
we took a route that eventually brought us to the main line returning down from middle to north peak. we were happy to have ascended each of the five peaks (petals) of flower mountain.
by cable car (the longest in asia), it was just 7 minutes down to the park entrance. we caught a shuttle bus into town, then transferred to a bus for xian.
our guides told us that we had walked up and down a total of 4000 stairs! we were glad that we did not have this information when we started. for three days after returning home, our sore leg muscles instructed us to take the elevator to our fifth floor apartment rather than climbing the stairs.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to Chaohu, the beautiful "great garden of centralAnhui". Im Wang Bing, the tour guide of Anhui travel agency. Today Ill showyou the dreamlike world in pictures and the dreamlike water town. When I meetyou for the first time, how about reciting a poem to help you have fun?
Chaohu Lake is like an inkstone, with Gushan as its ink mill. Laoshan islike a sheeps brush, which is enough to write the green sky eight line script. What about? Is it domineering? Ha ha, dont be fooled by Xiao Wang. Thismagnificent seven character poem is not written by me. It comes from LiHongzhang, a famous person in Hefei. What is the beauty of his poetry? Lets goto the bottom together!
On the way to Chaohu, Id like to tell you a beautiful legend: we all knowthat Chaohu is named because it looks like a birds nest, but do you know theorigin of its other name "Jiaohu"? According to the records of Soushenji, Chaohuwas a state in ancient times. One year, there was a severe drought. Xiaobailongsecretly rained to eliminate the drought. He broke the heavenly rule and wasbeaten down. He met grandma Jiao to help him. In return for Jiaos help, XiaoBailong tells the emperor of heaven that he will sink into Chaohu Lake. WhenJiao gets the news, she runs around and tells the people of Chaohu Lake thatthey are saved. But Jiaos mother and daughter delayed their escape by tellingthe neighbors, and they were engulfed by the torrential flood. Later generationsadmired Jiaos noble character of sacrificing herself to save others, so theynamed the lake "Jiao Lake" and a mountain in the lake "Lao Mountain".
We look out of the window. Now the water area that comes into our eyes isChaohu Lake. As a matter of fact, Chaohu Lake is a faulted lake. As early asJurassic and Cretaceous, the strata around Chaohu Lake were faulted, whichhindered the water flow in the eastern Piedmont of Dabie Mountain in WesternChina and formed a vast water surface. After tens of millions of years ofcrustal movement and sediment deposition, about 15000 years ago, todays ChaohuLake was formed. It covers an area of more than 800 square kilometers, known as"eight hundred Li Lake sky", and is also one of the five largest freshwaterlakes in China.
Chaohu scenic spot is a national key scenic spot, mainly includingZhongmiao, Laoshan and Yinping mountain. Now when we get off the bus, we come toZhongmiao and Laoshan Scenic spots, which are the most concentrated andcharacteristic scenic spots. It is a tourist scenic spot integrating lake, mountain, island, tower, temple and temple. First of all, lets take a look atZhongmiao, which is named after its location between Hefei and Chaoxian. TheZhongmiao temple was first built in the Han Dynasty and has a history of morethan 20__ years. And its most brilliant time was "Jiuhua in the south, Zhongmiaoin the north", which was very popular. During the important festivals, thepilgrimage team reached dozens of miles. Lets have a look at the bluestonesteps under our feet. Thats the famous shibada. Only by passing it can we cometo the big temple of Zhongmiao. It is said that this place was originally aTaoist temple. At the beginning of the temple, what was worshiped was BixiaYuanjun, which is now the "Empress of the temple". By the Wei, Jin, southern andNorthern Dynasties, Buddhism began to prevail, Taoism gradually declined, so theoriginal Taoist temple gradually became a Buddhist temple.
Walking through the temple, you can see that there are three islands in thelake in the distance, and the biggest one is Laoshan, which is about 3000 metersaway from the temple. Although it is only 4000 meters around the island, thereare three mountains and nine peaks, with many historic sites. Among them, themost famous is the three antiques of Laoshan: ancient pagoda, ancient temple andancient boat pond. There is another story about the ancient pagoda: the ancientpagoda was built in the late Ming Dynasty, but it was not completed due to theoutbreak of the nongming uprising. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of theQing Dynasty, local gentry lobbied Li Hongzhang to say, "with the tip of LaoshanMountain, Luzhou came out first." Li Hongzhang was very happy to hear that, andordered to raise funds to build the pagoda and named it "Wenfeng pagoda".Standing on the Wenfeng tower, you can also see huazangjing temple, an ancienttemple of three ancient times in Zhanmu mountain. Huazangjing temple is anancient temple built in memory of jiaolao, goddess of Chaohu. It was first builtin the Jin Dynasty and rebuilt in the late Qing Dynasty when Wenfeng pagoda wasbuilt. It was renamed "Chaohu Temple" and "SHENGFEI Temple". After seeing thesecond ancient of Laoshan, you must want to know the third ancient boat pond ofLaoshan. This ancient boat pond is the harbor surrounded by huge stones that hitone or two kilos. There are two harbors like this. Do you know why? Because ofthe southeast wind in the first half of the year and the northwest wind in thesecond half of the year, two boat ponds were built. It is the warship haven ofChaohu Navy.
Well, the good time is always short. After tasting the delicacy of "Chaohuthree treasures" silver fish, white shrimp and crab, our trip today is over. Ibelieve that in the near future, I can still lead you to visit Chaohu again andtaste three treasures!

Tian’anmen Rostrum
Tian’anmen( the Gate of Heavenly Peace), is located in the center ofBeijing. It was first built in 1417 and named Chengtianmen( the Gate of HeavenlySuccession). At the end of the Ming Dynasty, it was seriously damaged by war. When it was rebuilt under the Qing in 1651, it was renamed Tian’anmen, andserved as the main entrance to the Imperial City, the administrative andresidential quarters for court officials and retainers. The southern sections ofthe Imperial City wall still stand on both sides of the Gate. The tower at thetop of the gate is nine-room wide and five –room deep. According to the Book ofChanges, the two numbers nine and five, when combined, symbolize the supremestatus of a sovereign.During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tian’anmen was theplace where state ceremonies took place. The most important one of them was theissuing of imperial edicts, which followed these steps:
1) The Minister of Rites would receive the edict in Taihedian( Hall ofSupreme Harmony), where the Emperor was holding his court. The minister wouldthen carry the decree on a yunpan( tray of cloud), and withdraw from the hallvia Taihemen( Gate of supreme Harmony)
2) The Minister would put the tray in a miniature longting( dragonpavilion). Beneath a yellow umbrella and carry it via Wumen( Meridian Gate), toTian’anmen Gate tower.
3) A courtier would be invested to proclaim the edict. The civil andmilitary officials lining both sides of the gateway beneath the tower wouldprostrate themselves in the direction of the emperor in waiting for the decreeto the proclaimed.
4) The courtier would then put the edict in a phoenix-shaped wooden box andlower it from the tower by means of a silk cord. The document would finally becarried in a similar tray of cloud under a yellow umbrella to the Ministry ofRites.
5) The edict, copied on yellow paper, would be made known to the wholecountry.
Such a process was historically recorded as “ Imperial Edict Issued byGolden Phoenix”.During the Ming and Qing dynasties Tian’anmen was the mostimportant passage. It was this gate that the Emperor and his retinue would gothrough on their way to the altars for ritual and religious activities.
On the Westside of Tian’anmen stands ZhongshanPark( Dr. Sun Yat-sen’sPark), and on the east side, the Working People’s Cultural Palave. The Park wasformerly called Shejitan( Altar of Land and Grain), built in 1420 for offeringsacrificial items to the God of Land. It was opened to the public as a park in1914 and its name was changed in 1928 to the present one in memory of the greatpioneer of the Chinese Democratic Revolution. The Working People’s CulturalPalace used to be Taimiao( the Supreme Ancestral Temple), where tablets of thedeceased dynastic rulers were kept.
The stream in front of Tian’anmen is called Waijinshuihe( Outer GoldenRiver),with seven marble bridges spanning over it . Of these sevenbridges, historical records say the middle one was for the exclusive use of theemperor and was accordingly called Yuluqiao( Imperial Bridge). The bridgesflanking it on either side were meant for the members of the royal family andwere therefore called Wanggongqiao( Royal’s Bridges). Farther away on each sideof the two were bridges for officials ranking above the third order and werenamed Pinjiqiao( ministerial Bridges). The remaining two bridges were for theuse by the retinue below the third order and wre called Gongshengqiao( commonBridges). They anr the one in front of the Supreme Ancestral Temple to the eastand the one in front of the Altar of land and Grain to the west.
The two stone lions by the Gate of Tian’anmen, one on each side were meantas sentries. They gaze toward the middle axis, guarding the emperor’s walkway. In front of the gate stands a pair of marble columns called Huabiao. They areelaborately cut in bas-relief following the pattern of a legendary dragon.Behind the gate stands another pair of similar columns. The story of Huabiao maybe traced to a couple of sources. One of the versions accredits its invention toone of the Chinese sage kings named Yao, who was said to have set up a woodenpillar in order to allow the ordinary people to expose evil-doers, hence it wasoriginally called a slander pillar. Later it ws reduced to a signpost, and nowit serves as an ornament.

Good morning! Ladies and gentlemen! Today, with such great joy, on behalf of Anhui Travel Agency. I’d like to extend our warm welcome to all of you, our distinguished guest from the other side of the Pacific. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Li Xin and I work for Anhui Travel Agency .During your short stay in jiuhuashan, I’ll be your local guide. It’s my honor to be of your service. If you have any request, go ahead! I’ll try my best to help you and make your stay comfortable!
It’s my honor to be of your service. If you have any special interest, please let me know, and I highly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Ok, now we are heading for Mt.Jiuhua, which is known as one of the four Buddhist Mountains in China. It’s about 30 minutes’ bus ride. On the way you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and I’d like to give you a brief introduction about Mt.Jiuhua.
Mt.Jiuhua was originally known as Jiuzi (Nine-Peak) Mount. Li Bai, a famous Chinese poet over 1300 years ago wrote of the mountain: ”sailing on the Yangtze River, watching Mt.Jiuhua from after, green water falls from the sky, nine lotuses appear in the air.” This expresses the poet’s great admiration for Mt.Jiuhua. From then on, the mountain was renamed as Mt.Jiuhua.
Mt.Jiuhua covers more than 100 square kilometers in area, which has been known to have 99 peaks, and the main peak of the Shiwang Peak is 1342m above sea level. Mt.Jiuhua is full of waterfalls, streams, exotic-looking boulders, ancient caves, old pines and exuberant bamboo. With the richly variegated landscape, the ancient temples are tucked away amid the dense woods and the air reverberates with the tolling of the bells at dawn and dusk. Mt.Jiuhua is usually known as the No.1 Mountain of the southeast.
Ok, I have said too much about the Mt.Jiuhua, and I expect you have got a general idea about it. Seeing is Beliving. I’m sure you will learn a lot about Chinese culture and Buddhism after the visit, and you will also be impressed deeply by the wonderful scenery. Let’s get off the bus and bring your camera. I’ll show you around the scenic areas.
Look! So many monks, why? Yes, that’s it! Because Mt.Jiuhua is a Buddhist mountain. Especially on July 30th of Chinese Lunar is the birthday of Earch Buddha, and a great Buddhist ceremony is held on this day. Around that day every year, the mountain is the site of a temple fair. A large number of monks, nuns, pilgrims and visitors come to burn incense, chant and sacrifice food. The activities of each year are different. Though today is not the festival, we can also enjoy the beautiful scenery. They are: Sunrise at Tiantai Platform, Evening bell of Huacheng Temple, Sitting on East Stone with pleasure, Fairy mark of Tianzhu, Taoyan waterfall, clouds around lotus peak and Phoenix Pine.
Ok, here we are, this is Huacheng Temple of Jiuhua Street. It was the first and oldest of all the temples of Mt.Jiuhua. Over 1500 years ago, Monk Beidu built a simple temple here. Then after 300 years it was reconstructed and named Huacheng Temple.
You see it lies a round plaza. Look at the center! What do you see? Yeah! It is a crescent shaped lotus pond named “Crescent Moon Pond” you can go towards it, what do you see? It is believed that Monk Jin Qiaojue used to free captive fish. Ok, now I say some brief introduction about it and then you can go around it. We’ll gather here after one hour, ok? The temple consists of four parts: the lobby, the grand hall, the back hall and the Scripture Tower. The ground slopes up with each part and the whole layout is natural. The doors, windows, brackets, beams, columns, steps and the cornerstone are carved with exquisite designs. In the hall are preserved horizontal boards inscribed by emperor in ancient time.
Ok! Is everyone here? 1, 2, 3… Ok, now, let’s go to see the Phoenix Pine, in Minyuan Scenic Area. Phoenix Pine is over 1400 years old, and is one of the four decorative trees in Anhui Province.
After seeing Phoenix Pine, we’ll finish our travel, and on behalf of my company, my Chinese colleagues and myself, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for your consideration, understanding, tolerance and cooperation.

All the buildings in the east, the most delicate to ship to the north of the hall, hall like a boat, pebbles, tile floor, steps prior to pattern for water wave shape, the artistic conception, give a person with water north laid red phoenix in morning sun, is a symbol of auspiciousness, long life. On both sides of the ship main hall hall with the excessive couplet: "month masters may visit, the flowers for the walls ship for the home." Tourists, when you look at the picture face after, you may have to forget this is a land landscape, as if walking in the lake, sitting in row in the brain.
