正是由于这种动力，当我站在这里的时候，倍感自信。当然仅仅有自信是不够的，还要有一定的能力。而从小什么都不会到今天能独立策划活动，从不会到会，从不好到好的过程，就是凭借着自信和虚心的态度来认真完成每一件工作的。

在中学，我担任过班长、学生会委员。在工作中，我自觉培养了我的合作与协调能力，我能真诚的与别人合作，并且协调好同学们之间的关系，对不良行为敢于大胆管理，从不姑息纵容，因此，赢得了老师和同学们的好评。

我经常从同学的角度来看待我们班干部的问题。在平时多与同学们谈心、沟通、交流，了解他们的性格、思想、爱好，倾听他们的心声，充分的听取他们的建议和意见。

我曾从他们的角度来组织活动，这样班级活动也总是开展得热火朝天。但人非圣贤，孰能无过，我也犯过错，但我敢于面对自己的错误，从同学与老师的帮助中虚心的接受批评，并改正错误，而且决不充许自己第二次在同一地方跌倒。

今天我之所以在这里参加竞选。我希望把我们班建立成为学校领导与学生之间心灵的桥梁，成为师生的一条纽带，成为一个真正的为同学服务，同学们真正爱它的团体，同时也想锻炼一下自己的能力，给自己一个展示能力的舞台。

与他人相比，我觉得自己多了一份自信，因为我是一个不服输的人，我有着一颗不折不扣的责任心和对我们班的满腔热情。当然，我如果没有当选，我将一如继往的认真工作，并且会做的更好，全力支持新一届班委的工作。因为我爱这个团体，因为爱，所以我要竭尽全力的去做。

如果我有幸当选，我将实事求是的为同学服务，并将与风华正茂的同学，团结协作，与时俱进，大胆改革，充分发挥我们我们班应有的作用，让它成为名副其实的团体。

最后我还想说：这次参加竞选班长本身就是对我的锻炼和考验，如果我当选为班长，我愿当一名同学们的勤务员，尽职尽责地为同学们服务。在课余时间组织各类文艺活动，丰富同学们的校园生活。我只想有个机会，用爱使我们的校园生活变的更加美好，请大家支持我，请记住我的名字。

Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.

Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and understand, without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s places.

Of course, this is a power, like my brand of fictional magic, that is morally neutral. One might use such an ability to manipulate, or control, just as much as to understand or sympathise.

And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.

I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces leads to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid.

What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy.

One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.

Over time, our great research universities drive human progress. They lay the foundation of life as it can be, more than capitalism, more than government policy. In life, personal and social ideals are everything or almost everything, and universities are all about ideas, so it works.

That is, it works provided certain conditions outside the academy are maintained. Universities are not invulnerable to the actions beyond their borders and they depend for their vitality on the societal respect for and commitment to what we do

Now, the enemies of the search for truth. What is important to realize is that the ideals that define the academy and guide the activity pursued herein, just like the primary freedoms we live in, do not come easily. They are in fact often counterintuitive. The embrace of freedom necessarily means you must accept a certain degree of unconformable disorder and even seeing chaos and sometimes unnerves the best of us.

There are many wise people who have commented on this fact of life. My favorite is a great justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., who is setting forth the first articulation of the modern first amendment jurisprudence noted that the choice the openness required for the search for truth runs against human instinct. He bluntly explained how the impulse to persecute those we disagree with is actually quote “perfectly logical, given the natural wish to believe what we want to believe.”

I have never thought that, I would pay such more attention to learning English because when I was six, I always got bad marks at school and I could not figure out the letters “ R” and “K”。 Yeah, that is impossible.

And I took it with my roommate, Carrie, who was then a brilliant literary student — and went on to be a brilliant literary scholar — and my brother — smart guy, but a water-polo-playing pre-med, who was a sophomore.The three of us take this class together. And then Carrie reads all the books in the original Greek and Latin, goes to all the lectures. I read all the books in English and go to most of the lectures. My brother is kind of busy. He reads one book of 12 and goes to a couple of lectures, marches himself up to our rooma couple days before the exam to get himself tutored. The three of us go to the exam together, and we sit down. 要创业总得有个目标吧，下面简单介绍一下我的创业梦想。

当今世界能源十分紧缺，而我国的能源形势更是不容乐观，因此开发可再生性能源是一个很好的项目。可再生性能源开发与销售公司，这也是我的初步梦想，作为信电学院的一名学生我人为自己的创业方向还是比较符合自己的专业，我真的希望将来能有一天，信电的孩子们可以走进我的公司信电的孩子们不用再为了找工作而发愁。

1、政策支持，学校鼓励。近几年，国家实行了创新工程，进行了体制创新和技术创新。教育部门出台了政策和措施，支持和鼓励在校大学生休学励志创业，欢迎出国留学生回国励志创业。从去年起，高考也放宽了入学年龄和婚否的限制，许多大学也陆续实行了学分制，一些高校相继开展大学生励志创业活动，具备励志创业计划大赛，这些举措都为大学生投身励志创业创造了前所未有的有利条件。

2、知识密集，技术先进。大学生群体励志创业者文化程度高，所学专业技术与励志创业紧密结合，能够学以致用，在技术创新上独树一帜。被媒体称为“中国励志创业第一人”的杨锦方是第一个将励志创业计划大赛引入清华圆、引入中国的人，他注册和创办了“视美乐”公司用所学的计算机知识，为公司发展做出了贡献。

You have a world of opportunity in front of you, and it is for you to decide what to do with this platform that you’ve worked so hard to earn.

No matter what field you enter after graduation, you have the opportunity to use your gifts to make a difference in the world.

This can feel daunting, at the outset of your post-Stanford life. Some of you may know exactly what contribution you want to make in the world, while others may still be searching for your way to make an impact.

But whatever you do, whatever profession you pursue or journey you take – whether you become a teacher or a community leader, a lawyer or a physician, an engineer or an artist, or a scholar or a scientist, or a mother or father, a caregiver to the next generation – whatever you make of your life and the opportunities before you, I hope you will use your gifts to change the world for the better.

Having a platform also comes with a responsibility. It requires an ongoing process of self-examination and a continual return to your guiding values.

You may find, at times, that the path forward is unclear. Or you may realize, in hindsight, that you have made missteps along the way.

All of us make mistakes. I certainly do – just ask my wife and kids!

All of our lives require self-examination.

Here’s something else I observed -- intellectual horsepower and tolerance alone does not make a generation great: unless you can break out of the bubble of your own making -— technologically, geographically, racially, and socioeconomically -— to truly connect with the world around you. Because it matters.

No matter what your material success or personal circumstance, it matters. You cant breathe fresh air or protect your children from a changing climate no matter what you make. If your sister is the victim of domestic violence, you are violated. If your brother can’t marry the man he loves, you are lessened. And if your best friend has to worry about being racially profiled, you live in a circumstance not worthy of us. (Applause.) It matters.

So be successful. I sincerely hope some of you become millionaires and billionaires. I mean that. But engage the world around you because you will be more successful and happier. And you can absolutely succeed in life without sacrificing your ideals or your commitments to others and family. I’m confident that you can do that, and I’m confident that this generation will do it more than any other.

Look to your left, as they say, and look to your right. And remember how foolish the people next to you look -- (laughter) -- in those ridiculous hats. (Laughter.) That’s what I want you to remember. I mean this. Because it means you’ve learned something from a great tradition.

我是五一班的李玉，今天我能站在这里，心里十分激动，因为我要继续竞选英语课代表。

要竞选英语课代表，毋庸置疑，就是要英语成绩优异，在班上起模范带头作用，工作认真，做好老师的小帮手。想必大家都知道，我在班上的“战绩”很好，可我对自己的要求很高，我担任过一年的课代表，经验比较丰富，我清楚的知道“榜样的力量是无穷的”。所以我认为我可以胜任这个职位。

In fairness to George, ‘pains is taken’ is the way they spoke back then. Today, Washington would probably say ‘take pains.’ Or maybe T-Pain.

But Washington, really, Washington’s point, and Washington U.’s motto, are principles I hope that all of you will take to heart: truth will prevail where pains are taken to bring it to light. And with truth comes strength.

The pains that every generation has taken to bring light are why secession didn’t succeed…secession didn’t succeed in 1794 or 1861. The pains taken by abolitionists, and suffragettes, and civil rights marchers, and marriage equality advocates brought America’s core truth to light: that all people are created equal.

And today…today, the necessity of taking pains to bring truth to light is greater than ever because the tools for spreading lies are more powerful than ever.

Since the dawn of democracy, there have always been those, to paraphrase Socrates, who try to make the weaker argument appear the stronger and who care more about winning debates than being truthful.

All of which he opposed -- from paying tens of millions of dollars in arrearages to an institution, he despised, the United Nations -- he was part of the so-called “black helicopter” crowd; to passing the chemical weapons treaty, constantly referring to, “we’ve never lost a war, and we’ve never won a treaty,” which he vehemently opposed. But we were able to do these things not because he changed his mind, but because in this new relationship to maintain it is required to play fair, to be straight. The cheap shots ended. And the chicanery to keep from having to being able to vote ended -- even though he knew I had the votes.

After that, we went on as he began to look at the other side of things and do some great things together that he supported like PEPFAR -— which by the way, George W. Bush deserves an overwhelming amount of credit for, by the way, which provided treatment and prevention HIV/AIDS in Africa and around the world, literally saving millions of lives.

So one piece of advice is try to look beyond the caricature of the person with whom you have to work. Resist the temptation to ascribe motive, because you really don’t know -— and it gets in the way of being able to reach a consensus on things that matter to you and to many other people.

Resist the temptation of your generation to let “network” become a verb that saps the personal away, that blinds you to the person right in front of you, blinds you to their hopes, their fears, and their burdens.

Build real relationships -— even with people with whom you vehemently disagree. You’ll not only be happier. You will be more successful.

Weve all been taught that we should help people. It is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. It may even win us favors in return. However, we must be realistic. We cant say yes to every request. If we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. Sometimes we simply dont have the time to help. In this case, we must know how to say no politely. When we need to say no, here is one method we can try. First, we should tell the truth. If we really cant do something, we should just say so. Second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. We must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. A true friend will understand. Finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. Sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. It can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. In short, we cannot please everyone all the time. Refusing favors is a part of life.

We must not, apologize for this but relish and champion it and find our own new contributions to this end. Yet at the same time, our world demands that we be more permeable as a university, more blended with life beyond the academy. The most striking physical manifestation of Columbia’s modern engagement with the larger world will our new Manhattanville campus, which is intentionally designed to be open and welcoming to the world.

Indeed, all of us feel the moral imperative to be working on solutions to global problems that frequently appeal to be beyond the grasp of sovereign governments and our own mostly diminished international organization.

Moreover to spend any time at Columbia is to be confronted with your sense of duty and purpose, along with your well-earned belief in your ability to make a difference.

This push and pull of truth-speaking and meaningful action is a tension endemic to higher education today and to the lives, you will live. The twin goals of serving society and the world while protecting our distinctive intellectual outlook are something we have always felt, but its centrality to our enterprise has only intensified over time. Happily, as we confront this dual agenda, there is a disheartening and indisputable reality. No group of graduates could be better equipped to navigate this precarious path than you.After all, you chose to attend Columbia at the beginning of a journey that one finds conclusion today and you elected to become part of a university that for 265 years has been distinctively defined by its commitment to addressing the insistent problems in the present.

All across America – at family gatherings, in social settings and workplaces, on college campuses, and certainly on social media, Americans are losing the ability to conduct civil and productive dialogue with those who hold different political views.

And that has profound effect…profound implications for our ability to function as a society. After all, when you can’t talk with one another, you can’t understand one another. When we can’t understand one another, we can’t work together. When we can’t work together, we can’t do anything, at least not anything big and important.

We face a lot of hard challenges in America today – from climate change to gun violence, to failing schools to the opioid epidemic, and on campuses, from the frightening trend towards racism, sexism, hatred, anti-Semitism and intolerance of unpopular views and opinions.

To have any hope of overcoming these challenges, we have to start by reclaiming our civic dialogue from those who are debasing and degrading it – and preventing us from getting things done.

All of you can help do that – no matter what your politics are and no matter what line of work you pursue later on. Maybe your passion is science or education, or the arts or education, or medicine or health care, or business. There is not a single issue that isn’t affected by political debates. And there is not a single issue that isn’t threatened by the breakdown in our civic discourse.

For your generation, there’s an incredible amount of pressure on all of you to succeed, particularly now that you have accomplished so much. You’re whole generation faces this pressure. I see it in my grandchildren who are honors students at other Ivy universities right now. You race to do what others think is right in high school. You raced through the bloodsport of college admissions. You raced through Yale for the next big thing. And all along, some of you compare yourself to the success of your peers on Facebook, Instagram, Linked-In, Twitter.

Today, some of you may have found that you slipped into the self-referential bubble that validates certain choices. And the bubble expands once you leave this campus, the pressures and anxiousness, as well -- take this job, make that much money, live in this place, hang out with people like you, take no real risks and have no real impact, while getting paid for the false sense of both.

But resist that temptation to rationalize what others view is the right choice for you -— instead of what you feel in your gut is the right choice —- that’s your North Star. Trust it. Follow it. Youre an incredible group of young women and men. And thats not hyperbole. Youre an incredible group.

大家上午好！

我叫，今年十二岁，我第一次站在台上演讲，我要竞选班长。我此时此刻无比激动，十分紧张，你会问，我为什么要竞选班长，因为我想为班级服务，为班级贡献力量，为班级争夺荣誉。班长是一个令人向往的职位，俗话说：”不想当将军的士兵，不是一个好士兵！”我就是那个想当将军的士兵。班长要有能力，有爱心，帮助老师、同学。我相信我有能力当一班之长。我热情开朗，团结同学，拥有爱心，我的语文、作文很好，同学们有不会的题可以来问我，我会一一为你们解答。当然金无足赤人无完人，我也有缺点，因为我的成绩很好，有些瞧不起差生，不过，如果当了班长，我一定会改掉坏毛病的。

假如我当上了班长，我会用旺盛的精力，清醒的头脑为班级服务。帮助同学提高成绩，时不时我会举办一些朗诵、演讲等等的活动，如果一些同学打架了，我会帮助调和。我想我们应该当实干家，不要那些修饰的词语。当然，我也会落选，但是我不气馁，我落选了就说明我还有缺点，我将改正缺点，下次继续竞选。

既然是山，我就要坚定不移；既然是浪，我就要有前进的方向；既然是阳光，我就要普照大地；既然是班长，我就要当老师和同学的桥梁，谢谢大家！
