I live in Pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs,guns and governments blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;a country where a former president is murdered in public,where the nations constitution and parliament are suspended at the same time,and where the voice of a common man is unheard.

Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a doctor.The idea of "scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued me.And then it happened!The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust of disillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a doctor.However,the turmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels,and hence Politics.

As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it is all-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is the omnipotent of Pakistan.It can mobilize public opinion,gear up propaganda machinery,make or repeal laws and what not.Backed up by public opinion,supported by the majority of the legislators,armed with the means to keep the people in a state of ignorance,political power crosses the limits of dictatorial powers.Political power,like the most powerful intoxicant,makes the persons in power to forget social ethics,political morality and obligations.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be "a refuge for the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at the deceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game.All these political parties are votaries of democracy,but the way they conduct themselves inside their own parties is nothing but senseless authoritarianism.Therefore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as a profession,but what they dont realize is that if we dont take a stand the system can never be changed.Thus,I want to study Politics so I can come back to my country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its people.If I can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.The world today is growing global.We are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,I chose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.

Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.I would be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know about their culture.This would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clear some preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an active participant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out of which I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of the two students to be selected from my school to participate in the English Speaking Union 08.Moreover, Ive taken part in Parliamentary style debates too.Therefore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and language will not be a barrier in my education.Furthermore, I have worked as an internee at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital for a month in summers.Here I learnt how to deal with patients,use the Auto Ref, handle files and punctuality.We also campaigned to a remote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patients free of cost.Another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellow colleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Childrens Village.In addition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize an event to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I enjoy Literature,especially the works of Shakespeare,Tennessee Williams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.Id be delighted to study in a challenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work and my ability to think out of the box,keenness for Politics and my perception of things,I understand,gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself,and if provided with an opportunity,Id make the university proud.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined， I was quiet， na?ve， and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council， one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. When I looked up leadership in the dictionary， it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is， I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers， I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and， leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems， lead through adversity， and be versatile. From answering this question， I realized that I could lead effectively， even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. They had a panel made up of 3 lawyers and 5 company representatives as agents while we just had 3 persons—two lawyers and me. Under such condition, I was able to cooperate with them and clearly stated my opinions without any nervousness, which got their respect. This matter greatly inspired my enthusiasm on study.

In addition, I took part in the contact draft in several companies. In the process, when I met a lot of problems, I often turned to my teachers for help, which made good impression on them. As I cherished each practice, I studied my specialty and English hard. I am applying for admission to the Ph.D. program in Electrical and ComputerEngineering， at the University of California， Berkeley. I present my researchexperience and study objectives in this statement of purpose. I would like tobuild on my solid education and experience as an engineer for a Ph. D. degree incomputer science at a distinguished university. I wish in particular to betrained at an advanced level in software systems， database systems， applied-AIand knowledge-based systems. My ultimate goal is to become a professor teachingcomputer science at a Chinese university. I believe that advanced training in aquality graduate program will help me realize my goal.

My father is a chartered accountant and my mother is a banker. During mydays at Engineering College I used to go to my fathers office and help himmanage his portfolio of equities and other financial instruments. This was thetime I learnt the first lesson of finance from my father i.e. risk and returnare proportionate. In 1998 when I was in the second year the China stock marketcrashed. But fortunately， my father had a well-diversified portfolio because ofwhich our returns were protected from the downside risk. This was when I learntthe second principle of finance from my father i.e. diversification reducesrisk. While I understood these two principles intuitively， it produced in me astrong urge to learn and understand the complex theory behind the working ofFinance. This， I believe， was a turning point in my career. I made up my mind topursue a career in Finance and hence decided to do a Masters program in BusinessAdministration.

As I was finishing college， my mother had both of her hips replaced withartificial ones because all of the cartilage in her hip joints had worn away andit was very painful for her to walk. I found it fascinating that engineers，orthopedic surgeons， and biologists had all worked together to design theseartificial joints that completely transform. peoples lives by giving them backpain-free mobility， and I knew at that moment that this was an area about whichI wanted to learn more. In China these days， university graduates who have notbeen lucky enough to settle into their dream jobs often look to graduatedstudies as a way to kill the time that they cannot otherwise spend meaningfully.I am prepared to go against the social conventions by putting on hold asuccessful research career that promised to be even more successful. With eightyears of productive and highly valued practical research behind me， I now wouldlike to revert to a more intellectual life so that I can conduct moretheoretical discourses.

For the past three years， my undergraduate education has exposed me to thevarious sub-fields of Computer Science (CS). However， our syllabus has focusedmainly on "traditional" CS topics， such as Operating systems and single-CPUsystems. We have had barely a glimpse of the newer technologies that are likelyto change the way computing is done in not-so-distant future. The desire toexamine such subjects in greater detail is what has prompted me to opt forgraduate study. Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s“reform. andopen”policies， economics plays an increasingly important role in the developmentof its global position. As a senior at Beijing University majoring in Economics，I feel that my field is fundamental to the progress of my country. Yet， at thesame time， I realize only too well that what I have learned as an undergraduateis far from enough. Therefore， it is my desire to pursue a graduate degree IEconomics at your university. 在获得优异成绩的同时，我还抽时间，挤时间发展自己多方面的兴趣。我喜欢打乒乓球、羽毛球、篮球，沉浸于体育锻炼的激情与豪迈中，在紧张与刺激间收获了强健的体魄。但比起体育锻炼，我更钟情于国学文化。

我喜欢国学的博大精深，喜欢国学的厚重神奇。课余，我已经阅读了多部国学经典，比如《孟子》《论语》《史记》《资治通鉴》《汉书》等，在文字与故事里感受到了国学的无限魅力。在我看来，国学不仅仅是传统文化，更是中华民族核心的价值理念和追求，是数千年来中国人思维方式行为方式生活方式生产方式的高度总结，是中华母亲的乳汁，是中华儿女的血脉、精神和灵魂，是中国人信仰的天空和大地。

出于对国学的热爱，我从小就立志要投身于祖国宝贵文化的学习、挖掘、弘扬中，用自己的所学，为国家的文化发展和民族的文化复兴，贡献自己的微薄之力。
