自1948年shannon提出了信息论以来，信息论被应用到各个研究领域。著名翻译家奈达看到信息论与翻译之间的契合，认为翻译就是信息传递的过程，由此将信息论引入到翻译领域。在信息论的基础上，代写论文奈达创立了翻译的等效理论，即译文在译语读者心中能产生与原文读者大致相同的反应。从信息论的角度来说，由于语言特质（linguistic idiosyncrasy）和文化差异等因素，原语信息会超出目标语读者的解码能力，给译语读者造成认知负担。为了达到译文的动态等值，则需要增加冗余度。按照奈达的逻辑，冗余度与等效原则成正比关系，冗余度越高，等效原则实现得越充分。
