Hello and welcome to Dali, the hometown of "five golden flowers".
Now our cruise ship is running on the West Erhe River, the dischargechannel of Erhai Lake. The sailing direction of the cruise ship is from west toEast. If you go further, you can see the vast Erhai Lake.
Erhai Lake, located in the northwest of Dali City, is a famous plateau lakein Yunnan Province. It is the seventh largest freshwater lake in China. It wasformed at the end of the ice age, and its main cause is subsidence and erosion, which belongs to structural fault lake. Erhai Lake, starting from Eryuan in thenorth, is about 42.58 km long and 9 km wide from east to west. The lake coversan area of 256.5 square kilometers. Although it is not as big as Dianchi Lake, its water storage capacity is much larger than Dianchi Lake. This is because theaverage depth of Erhai Lake is 10 meters, and the deepest can reach 20 meters. It was called "yeyushui" and "kunmichuan" in ancient times. But Xiaoxu prefersits current name Erhai. Because the name is more appropriate and lovely. Lookingdown from the sky, she is like a new moon, lying quietly between Cangshan andDali dam, like a lovely big ear. This is the Erhai moon in Dali.
Now our cruise ship has been driving in the rippling Erhai Lake.
You see, the lake water is clear, just like a flawless jade. It is verybeautiful. It is welcoming you from afar with a broad mind. If you come here onthe night of the 15th lunar month, the moon will be very round, very round. I amalso drunk with the scenery: the moon is round in the water, and the floatinglight shakes gold; the sky, with a jade mirror hanging high, seems to have justbathed in the lake. The water and the sky are shining. Its hard to tell whetherthe sky and the moon fall into the sea or the sea and the moon rise into thesky. Why is Erhai Lake moon so bright? The scientific conclusion is: first, thewater quality of Erhai Lake is very pure, with high transparency and strongreflection; second, there is less dust on the surface of Erhai Lake, and the airis fresh, which makes the water and the sky match each other and the moonlightbrighter. In addition, the famous Erhai moon lies in the fact that the whiteCangshan snow is reflected in the Erhai Lake, which forms the grand spectacle of"silver cangyu Erhai".
In front of us, the exquisite Island you can see is xiaoputuo, the smallestand most famous island in Erhai Lake, which is indispensable in the album ofDali. Xiaoputuo is only about 200 meters in circumference, and it is composed oflimestone, with a total area of about 70 square meters. Why is it called littlePutuo? Putuo is the abbreviation of Putuo Luojia mountain in Sanskrit, whichmeans little Baihua Mountain or little Huashu mountain. It is said that it isthe place where Guanyin practices in India. Therefore, all the holy places ofGuanyin are called Putuo Mountain. For example, Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang, oneof the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. Because the appearance of littlePutuo is more like the Taoist temple of Guanyin, but because its scale andterrain are relatively small, it is named "little Putuo". As you can see, littlePutuo looks like a natural bonsai in Erhai Lake from such a distance. In theeyes of the Bai people, little Putuo is the most spiritual island. The Baipeople in the nearby villages have to go to little Putuo for sacrifice every newyear or any happy event to celebrate or for peace. On the wedding day of thebridegroom and bride, the bridegroom will take the bride around the Island threetimes in a boat, hoping that little Putuo can bring them: Happiness andauspiciousness.
Today, all of you come to Dali from afar to feel the history, culture, customs and peoples feelings here. We also hope that little Putuo can bring youhappiness and peace. Now, lets get ready to land on the island. Lets enjoy thebeauty of this island.
Cangshan Mountain, also known as Diancangshan mountain, is named because ofits green color and white top. Cangshan Mountain stretches for more than 50kilometers and is composed of 19 peaks. It is towering and straight into thesky. The altitude is generally about 4000 meters, and the peak is covered withsnow all the year round. Amongthe 19 peaks, Malong peak is the highest, with an altitude of 4122 meters.

Cangshan has a beautiful natural landscape and many scenic spots. Such asthe famous butterfly spring, Fengyan cave and longan cave, Jiangjun cave,Gantong temple and Zhonghe temple. At the top of the mountain, there arebeautiful natural landscapes such as huadianbazi, ximatan, Huanglongtan andancient glacial relics. The ancients summarized the various natural landscapesof Cangshan as the eight sceneries of Cangshan, that is, Xiaose painted screen,Cangshan spring snow, Yunheng jade belt, Fengyan Shenghui, Bishui Dietan, Yujufloating cloud, Xipu pill stone, Jinxia sunset.
Cangshan is famous for its snow, cloud, spring and stone. Cangshan snow isthe most famous scenery in Dali. Snow capped Cangshan, wrapped in silver, shining in the sun, white crystal. As for Cangshan snow, there are many praisesfrom scholars and scholars in the past dynasties, as well as many folklores. LiYuanyang, a litterateur of Ming Dynasty, once praised: "RI Li, Cangshan snow,Yaotai 19 peaks".
According to legend, in ancient Dali, a group of plague gods spreadpestilence everywhere in one year, and pestilence prevailed in river and seaareas. Many people have been killed by the plague, and people are suffering. Atthe foot of Cangshan Mountain, the two brothers and sisters came back fromstudying law, determined to eliminate harm for the people. Brother with wind, sister with snow, the God of plague rushed to the top of Cangshan. In order tomake the people no longer affected by the plague, the elder brother turned intothe God of wind and the younger sister into the God of snow, freezing the God ofplague to death on the top of the mountain with strong wind and heavy snow.Since then, the snow on Cangshan has remained unchanged all year round, becomingthe first of the four sceneries -- Cangshan snow. Each of the 19 peaks ofCangshan Mountain is 3500 meters above sea level. The highest peak, Malong peak,is 4122 meters. Due to its high altitude, the peak is extremely cold and snowyall the year round. It is crystal clear and white in the sun, which isspectacular.
Cangshans clouds are even more famous. Clouds gather and disperse, sometimes as light as smoke, sometimes as thick as ink. Among the changeableclouds, the most magical are "Wangfu cloud" and "Yudai cloud". The so-called"Wangfu cloud" means that every winter and spring, a lonely white cloud oftenappears on the top of Cangshan Yuju peak, up and down, fluttering up and down, looking forward and looking forward. The strange thing is that as soon as itappears, there will be a storm in Diancangshan, blowing towards Erhai Lake. Theso-called "jade belt cloud" refers to the fact that when summer is late andautumn is early and rain is early and sunny, white clouds often appear betweenthe 19 peaks of Cangshan Mountain. The clouds gather and slowly pull apart, justlike a white jade belt across the green hillside, stretching for tens of miles.Whats wonderful is that "jade belt cloud" can foretell a good harvest inagriculture - it appears many times, and it was in good weather that year. Thelocal Bai people have a farming proverb: "Cangshan is a jade belt, hungry dogseat white rice.".
Jade belt cloud
Most of them appear in the late summer and early autumn when it is sunnyafter rain. There is a milky white ribbon cloud around the waist of CangshanMountain, winding the hillside and dividing the hundred mile Cangshan Mountaininto two parts, so it is called "cloud cross jade belt".
In the morning after the rain in autumn, the wisps of clouds appear on thewaist of Cangshan Mountain, and then gradually gather together to form aflawless white line, like a jade belt across the 19th peak of Cangshan Mountain, cutting off the towering mountains; then slowly they turn into thousands of snowlilies, blooming on the top of Cangshan Mountain, and in a twinkling of an eye, they disappear like willow catkins dancing in the spring breeze.
It is said that this is the coming of Guanyin, which indicates that thecoming year will be a good year. Zhang Yangdu, a man of Qing Dynasty, once said,"when autumn comes and rain comes, the sky will seal the mountain with jade."."To praise the wonderful jade belt cloud.
Wang Fuyun
In autumn and winter, a kind of flocculent white cloud often appears on thetop of the jade Bureau peak of Cangshan Mountain. It is like a princess full ofmelancholy, bowing down to visit her lover who has been beaten to the bottom ofthe sea. This is the "Wangfu cloud" in folklore. As long as the Wangfu cloudappears, the wind roars, the Erhai Lake is rough and the boat cant go, so it isalso called Wudu cloud.
It is said that wangfuyun is the incarnation of princess a of Nanzhao.Because she fell in love with young hunters and people on Cangshan Mountain, shewas opposed by her father and asked master lailuo to kill a long and turn herinto a stone mule. The princess died of anger and yearning at the jade Bureaupeak of Cangshan Mountain. Her essence turned into a white cloud. She was angryand windy. She vowed to blow open the sea to find her lover. Since then, everyautumn and winter, there is often a white and elegant cloud blowing from thejade Bureau peak of Cangshan Mountain to the vast sky. Under the background ofthe blue sky, it looks very clean and beautiful, like a pure girl standing onthe top of Cangshan Mountain overlooking Erhai Lake. As soon as it appears, thesea will be windy and the Erhai Lake will be rolling. The strong wind has thetendency of never giving up without blowing the sea and seeing the stone snailson the sea floor.
Cangshan spring is also famous. There are many glacial lakes on the top ofthe 19th peak, which is more than 3800 meters above sea level. These lakes areleft by Quaternary glaciers. There are also the streams of the eighteen streams, the waterfalls and springs, and the four seasons. Nourished by pure and sweetspring water, Cangshan is full of vitality. Ice lake, covered with primevalforests and many rare trees, exotic flowers. Cangshans flowers have long beenfamous, and it also makes Cangshan famous all over the world. "More than onemillion people in the United States know about Cangshan Mountain in Dali,Yunnan, China, because they all grow many beautiful azaleas from CangshanMountain in Dali."
Cangshans stone is famous at home and abroad. Guo Moruo wrote the poem"Ode to marble:" the three pagodas are high and ancient, reflecting on the yearof Zhenguan. Cangshan rhymes with wind and moon, and strange stones spit cloudsand smoke. Phase in the heart and chest, cool when axillary. Heavens work andmanpowers generation are rare overseas. " Cangshan breeds marble, which is thesoul of Cangshan. This kind of magnificent stone is found in many parts of theworld. Dudali is the most beautiful and has been developed early. Therefore, this kind of stone is called "marble" all over the world. Dali is also famousfor its stones.
Cangshan is now along the waist of the mountain opened up a tour road.Outside the north gate of Dali ancient city, there is a 7000 meter longcableway, which can reach Zhonghe Temple directly. Visitors can go back andforth by cableway.
Cangshan ximatan
Ximatan, formerly known as biaolongtan, is located on a platform at the topof Yuju peak, the second peak of Cangshan Mountain, with an altitude of 40097meters and about 50 steps from the peak. Ximatan has a radius of more than 100meters and a water depth of 1.67 meters. It is in the shape of an elliptical potbottom. The bottom of the pool and its surroundings are naturally paved withvery thin bluestone slabs. The lake is crystal clear and does not dry up all theyear round. It is a beautiful alpine lake on the top of Cangshan Mountain.
The lake is surrounded by Alpine Rhododendron shrubbery in the shape ofQiulong, and not far below is the tall and straight primitive forest belt ofAbies faxoniana and bamboo forest belt of Cangshan.
At the turn of spring and summer, rhododendrons are in full bloom. Thelakeside is as colorful as clouds. On one side, there are fresh green bamboosand dark blue fir, and on the other side, there are mottled gray and yellow rockpeaks and stone screens, reflecting the lake. If you are interested in lying ona rock beside the lake and kissing and caressing your cheek with clusters ofpink Bauhinia, pale yellow wild lily and colorful dragon claw flowers, you willfeel tired and refreshed. In addition, the fragrance of Rhododendron in the windmakes you forget to return.

The rock passes through a line, and the hole is like the eyeof a Phoenix. The back of the cave is the side of Longquan peak. In front of thecave is a huge lingxu rock. When you walk to the edge of the rock and look down, you can see the green jade stream and a pitian pouring down. The clouds are vastand the abyss is dazzling. This is the "sacrificial cliff". The ancient Buddha cave, located on Yunlong peak of Cangshan Mountain inDali, is a natural karst cave. It is named after the Buddha statue in the cave.Xu Xiake, a famous geographer of China in the late Ming Dynasty, once inspectedit and recorded in the diary of a trip to Yunnan that "there is an ancientBuddha cave in Nanshan gorge, which is very different, but hanging on the bankand cliffs, Im afraid its impossible to walk, and no one can recognize itwithout a guide.". Under the guidance of the guide, Xu Xiake, fearing nodifficulties and dangers, climbed straight down to the entrance of the cave, but"its very difficult to jump steep, so he cant go down.". When people readthis, they all feel sorry for Xu Xiakes failure to enter the cave forinvestigation. At the same time, it also adds a layer of mystery to the ancientBuddha cave.
The cave is a wonderful world with deep twists and turns and strange rocks. This kind of landscape is caused by the continuous infiltration of groundwaterand the long-term deposition of calcium carbonate in the water, graduallyforming stalagmites and stalagmites. Later, the monks found this strange scene. In order to persuade the faithful men and women to obtain "merits", they carvedBuddha and Bodhisattva statues on these stalagmites and stalagmites. This isexactly what Xu Xiake said in his travels: "a few years ago, a monk lived hereand set up many Buddhas, so he took the name of Buddha.". Of course, the monksdid not expect to leave a precious cultural and artistic heritage for todayspeople when they carved.

历史学家说:从这里可以找到中国古代与现代历史文化的衔接点;
哲学家说:这里是研究古徽州历史、文化、经济、艺术乃至封建宗法制度的理想去处;

Today we are going to visit Fenghuang Mountain scenic spot.
Fenghuang mountain, located 60 kilometers northwest of Dandong City, hasbeen known as "the first famous mountain in Eastern Liaoning" since ancienttimes. During the reign of Daoguang and Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty, Fenghuangmountain, together with Yiwulu Mountain, Qianshan Mountain and Yaoshan mountain, was known as the "four famous mountains in Fengtian province". Now it is knownas "the famous mountain of the country" and "the first famous mountain of theGreat Wall".
Now the road we take is Shendan Road, that is, the road from Dandong toShenyang. The highway is about 280 kilometers long, and Fenghuang mountain isjust next to Shendan. It is 60 kilometers from Dandong to Fenghuang mountain, and 220 kilometers from Fenghuang mountain to Shenyang. It takes about half anhour from here to Fenghuang mountain. Id like to use this time to tell youabout Fenghuang mountain.
The reason why Fenghuang mountain is called Fenghuang mountain is notbecause it looks like a Phoenix, but according to a legend: during the reign ofemperor Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty, Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty, came to visit the mountain in admiration of his name. The Phoenix danced on the"ancestor worship stone" and nodded to Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty. EmperorTaizong of Tang Dynasty was very happy and immediately gave the mountain"Fenghuang Mountain". Fenghuang mountain is located in the remaining vein ofChangbai Mountain, covering an area of more than 120 square kilometers. Thehighest peak is Zanyun peak, with an altitude of 836.4. Fenghuang mountain isdivided into Xishan, Dongshan, Miaogou, Gucheng, Yulong lake and other scenicspots. It is often said that Fenghuang Mountain has the characteristics ofTaishan, Huashan, Huangshan and Emei. Because of the time constraint, we cantvisit every scenic spot of Fenghuang mountain today. Id like to visit severalrepresentative scenic spots of Xishan Mountain with you, so that we can have aglimpse and see the whole picture.
Now we stop here. Please get ready for climbing.
We are now at the gate of Fenghuang mountain. This is an antique stylebuilding. On the left is Phoenix, male bird, on the right is Phoenix, femalebird.
What we see in front of us is Ziyang temple. It is said that Ziyang isauspicious in Taoism, so the Taoist temple takes this as its name. Today, wealso come to Ziyang Temple early. Its a good opportunity for us to "come fromthe East". It seems that this will bring us good luck and good luck. Ziyangtemple is hosted by Fenghuang mountain, also known as Sanguan hall. It was firstbuilt in the early years of Hongzhi of Ming Dynasty. It is composed of Sanguanhall, dongxipeidian hall, bell and Drum Tower.
Now lets go into the Sanguan hall and have a look. In the hall of threeofficials, there are statues of heaven, earth and water. In the middle is TianGuan Yao, who can bless; on the right is di min Shun, who can forgive sins; onthe left is Shui Guan Yu, who can punish evils. If devout people worship infront of the three official statues, they will get rid of their sins and enjoythe blessings of heaven. On the left side of the three official statues are thegroup sculptures of "jinnv in yaochi" (legend), on the right side are the groupsculptures of "Eight Immortals crossing the sea" (legend), and on the east sideof the main hall are the "Dharma protector Lingguan" (legend) Everyone is equalbefore the law. The prince is guilty of the same crime as the common people. Onthe west side is the "law protecting land". The pictures on the wall are "Maguxianshou", "Dayu Zhishui", "emperor zhanchiyou", "Shennong tasted a hundredherbs" (Legends). These legends can bring you to the distant past and arouseyour continuous nostalgia for the past. As partners of Ziyang temple, thelegends of the four ancient pines have been guarding Ziyang temple for more thanhalf a century. The ancient pines and the ancient temples complement each other, making Ziyang Temple more solemn and simple.
There are two holes on the left and right in the three church cave. To theleft is the "tongxuan cave". After drilling through the "tongxuan cave" andpassing through the "Tongtian Biequ", after getting out of the cave, climbingthe hanging wall is the "Guanyin Pavilion". At the top of this huge stone, therewas a chair like depression that could only accommodate one person, which is theGuanyin seat. Why does Guanyin sit here? Because there are many deities andBuddhas living in its cave, and there are many different sects, it isinconvenient for her to practice the skills there, so she changed the place ofmeditation to here. Over time, the rock was set in a pit. Guanyin Bodhisattvaoften teaches magic, preaches scriptures and preaches to the flute here. Thebelievers feel very uneasy. In order to be grateful and praise virtue and showthe sincerity of respecting the teacher, a temple has been built on the rock onthe right, which is now the Guanyin Pavilion. From then on, faithful men andwomen went back and forth like shuttles, worshiping and offering incense.Guanyin pavilion was built in the reign of emperor Shenzong of Ming Dynasty. Itis divided into two layers, one for Guanyin and the other for Weituo. "Guanyin"is the name of a Buddhist Bodhisattva. According to the Buddhist "Dharma Sutra ·Pu men pin", if all the dead people recite their name, that is "Guanyin", theBodhisattva immediately observes their voice and goes to rescue and extricatethemselves. According to this statement, "Guanyin" is paraphrased. Later, LiShimin, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty, taboo the word "Shi", so he had to omit"Shi" and change it to "Guanyin". It is said that Guanyin was originally maleand female. Guanyin began in the northern and Southern Dynasties, and there aremany legends about Bodhisattvas with thousands of hands and thousands of eyesand giving away children and wealth. As for the "pure water bottle" and the"willow branch" in Guanyins hand, they were originally the meaning of universalBuddhism and a symbolic "prop". Later, it became a magic weapon to control theweather in the world, a panacea to treat all kinds of diseases. Wei Tuo is aBuddhist God. His surname is Wei and his name is Hun. He is one of the EightGenerals of the southern Changtian king, ranking first among the 32 generals ofthe four heavenly kings.
Now we come to Phoenix cave. There is a doggerel when visiting FenghuangMountain: "come to Fenghuang mountain, explore Fenghuang cave, climb arrow eyepeak, and enjoy endless scenery.". When it comes to Fenghuang mountain, you haveto experience the interesting Fenghuang cave and climb the famous "arrow eyepeak". It seems that climbing arrow eye peak is too difficult. As the sayinggoes, "the mountain is not high, there are Fairy Spirit.". We have worshippedmany immortals. It can be said that the aura of Fenghuang Mountain has beenappreciated. Now we go into Fenghuang cave to find out. I dont think we haveany regrets. It is said that Phoenix cave is the habitat of Phoenix, whichcontains phoenix eggs. When Emperor Taizong visited Fenghuang mountain,Fenghuang flew out of the cave to worship his ancestors. Phoenix cave is about200 meters long. After entering the cave, the sky is bright, and the darker yougo, you need to hold a candle.
OK, now we have the lighting tools ready. Lets experience the Phoenix cavepersonally?
Everybody, Phoenix cave is really good ~!
OK, I think everyone is a little tired now. Lets have a rest here. If youhave any questions, lets learn from each other, and Ill learn from you. OK,thank you.

Let’s go!

In the beautiful plateau Tibet, there are not only Mount Qomolangma, theroof of the world, but also the mysterious Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple andXiaozhao temple. Today, I will take you to take a look at the supreme positionin Tibetan Buddhism - the Jokhang Temple.
Dazhao temple, also known as "zulakang" and "juekang", is located in thecenter of Lhasas old city. It was built by King Songzanganbu of Tibet and has ahistory of more than 1300 years. Dazhao temple is a Tibetan Buddhist temple, andalso the earliest existing civil structure building in Tibet. It creates aTibetan Hirakawa style temple pattern, and is a building integrating Tang,Tibetan, Nepalese, Indian and other artistic styles. The enthusiastic localguide led us into this temple full of mystery and beautiful legend.
"The Jokhang Temple is an eternal example of Tibetan religiousarchitecture. Now, what we see are tens of thousands of butter lamps that haveleft traces of time and pilgrims. These butter lamps are on day and night, andwill not go out. Why? Because countless devout Tibetans in Tibetan areas keepdonating butter to temples, so as to ensure the continuous use of butter forthese butter lamps worshipped in front of Buddhas platform... " I was thinkingabout why. After listening to the guides explanation, I finally understood why.It seems that devout belief is the strongest support for Tibetans. Buddha hasbecome their spiritual sustenance, carrying their hope and yearning for a betterlife in the future. "Lets go on!" the guides call brought me back to reality. So I took back my mind and quickly followed.
The stone floor is as bright as a mirror because of the friction ofbelievers for many years. There is a huge Buddha statue on the left and right ofthe hall. The one on the left is lianhuasheng, the founder of the red crosssect, and the one on the right is the future Buddha. Further inside, there isthe temple of the sacred goat remjem. Why do you call it this name? Because agoats head naturally grows in the corner of the temple, so Tibetans take thisinteresting name for it. At the same time, the guide also told a fairy talerelated to this hall. It is said that in order to build a palace for theNepalese princess who was married at that time, during the reign of the fifthTibetan king Songzanganbu, he traveled all over Tibet and found many places, butthey all felt that they were not suitable. Songzanganbu decided to leave thematter to God. So he took one of Princess nibbles rings and threw it into theair. Where the ring fell, he built the palace. Unexpectedly, the ring fell in alake, and a white tower appeared in the lake. Songzanganbu, who thought it wasauspicious, decided to fill the lake and build a palace. Because they wereworking in the lake, people and yaks were too heavy to transport the stones tofill the lake, so they took the lighter goats as the main labor force at thattime. After efforts, the lake was finally filled up and the present JokhangTemple was built. However, many goats died in that project. In order tocommemorate the achievements of the goats, the king of Tibet called this place"Reza" (the goat represented by "Reza"). With the passage of time, "Reza" hasgradually been called "Lhasa", so there is a saying in Tibet that there wasJokhang temple first and Lhasa city later.
Next, we will visit the 12-year-old statue of Sakyamuni, the treasure ofJokhang Temple. You must be curious about what an isomorphic statue is? It is aBuddha statue carved according to the height and appearance of Sakyamuni when hewas 12 years old. It is the only one in the world. This Buddha statue wasbrought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng, who married a Nepalese princess. It tookhim more than three years to come to Lhasa. It is the most complete statue ofSakyamuni in the world. When I didnt see it, I thought it should be about thesame height as me, but when I saw it, my chin was startled! Now this Buddha isfour or five meters tall, and its head is like a big washbasin. Puzzled, I askedthe guide, "was Sakyamuni so old when he was 12?" the guide said with a smile,"no, the original statue is the same size as a child about 10 years old, butbecause the monks here are very devout. Every day, I brush the Buddhas bodywith gold powder, from head to toe, and not once a day. Monks will brush theBuddhas body with gold powder on time. After a long time, the Buddhas bodybecomes bigger and bigger God! Its incredible that a Buddha statue as tall as achild can be painted so big with gold by devout believers. Its conceivable thatthis Buddha statue has great weight in the hearts of Tibetans.
Then we visited Maitreya hall, Guanyin Bodhisattva hall, sanfawang hall,Tara hall, Shenbian tower and so on. As the sun sets, the visit is drawing to aclose. In fact, there are many things I want to introduce to you, but I cantdescribe them one by one. But what I want to tell you is that the Jokhang Templehas given me a new understanding of Tibetan Buddhist culture and made me fall inlove with this mysterious and interesting place. Students, I hope you can gothere to have a look and appreciate the mystery and beauty in the future!
Mount Hua is the highest of China’s five sacred mountains. It is 120kilometers east of Xian. It has five peaks that resemble the petals of a flower. The highest peak is 2180 meters (7085 feet).
We had had discussions about going to Mount Hua with some graduate studentsfrom Computer Science. That didn’t work out due to changes in schedules on bothsides. Also, they were planning to do the climb at night to be able to reach thepeak at sunrise. That did not appeal to us. We wanted to spend a night on themountain. Fran’s department arranged a trip for us, making reservations at thesimple hotel on the North Peak. They sent two graduate students to accompany us,though they had not been to Mount Hua before. We met them at 8:00 on Saturdaymorning and took a taxi to the train station. There we asked around and locateda mini-bus. The bus made a couple of stops. One was to see a presentation aboutthe traditional medicines grown on the mountain and a chance to buy some ofthem. It probably would have been interesting if we understood Chinese. Ourguides gave us the general outline about what was said. The other stop was aquick lunch stop.
There are two approaches to Mount Hua. [Chinese proverb: “There is one roadand only one road to Mount Hua,” meaning that sometimes the hard way is the onlyway.] The west entrance involves 10 kilometers of walking on a road before youstart climbing. We went with the east entrance, where the bus brings you to thebase of a cable car that goes up to the 1500 meter North Peak. Our plan was towalk up to the North Peak, then climb to the four other peaks the next day andtake the cable car down.
We started the climb in the early afternoon. The path consists of stonesteps with rough chain link handrails in the narrowest areas (we wore ourbicycling gloves for hand protection). Physically, it is more like climbing thesteps of a skyscraper than trails at home. However, the temperature was about 95degrees and there was not much shade. We brought lots of water, including somebottles that we froze and some Gatorade that we got at the fancy departmentstore in downtown Xian. There are plenty of refreshment stands along the waywhere you can buy bottled water, the Chinese equivalent of Gatorade, and otherdrinks or snacks at a premium price.
We reached the North Peak before 4:00 PM and rested at the hotel. Our roomwas basic, but comfortable and clean enough. Because water is scarce on themountain, there were neither showers nor sinks available for washing. In thatsense the experience felt like camping, but we were sleeping in a big tent!
After dinner at the hotel restaurant, we spent some time talking with ourguides. We were a bit surprised to find that they both think of Japannegatively, but like the U.S. It seems that Japan’s WWII behavior in China hasnot been forgotten, and is emphasized in school.
We saw a beautiful sunset and watched the sky become resplendent withthousands of stars, including the Milky Way galaxy. This was the clearest skythat we have seen in China. The fresh air at Mount Hua is a treat!
Our guides had both been planning to get up at 4:00 AM to watch thesunrise. Fran and I made sleep a priority. We did happen to wake up a bit beforesunrise (our room faced east) and went outside to watch the sky become rosy.Ironically, our guides missed the sunrise because they had stayed up latewatching the European soccer championships on the television in their room
The plan for the day was to climb the other four peaks, but we reserved theright to shorten the route. The first part was a steep climb to Middle Peak. After the low North Peak, all the others are at roughly 20__ meters. There werecrowds on the way to Middle Peak – mostly Chinese hikers but we did see a fewother wai guo (foreigners) as well.
We visited two Taoist temples en route to Middle Peak. Each one had analtar with incense and offerings of fruit. The friendly monks invited us to saya prayer or to send blessings to loved ones. Fran accepted their invitation. Atthe first temple, she lit incense sticks and knelt on a cushion in front of thealtar saying a silent prayer for our safe journey to the various summits ofMount Hua (the prayer was answered). At the second temple, she knelt on acushion in front of the altar and sent silent blessings to several friends whoare experiencing challenging situations in their lives at present. After eachblessing, she leaned forward and the monk struck a drum.
After Middle Peak, the crowds got much thinner. The next was East Peak, which had a steep ladder climbing rock. Fran was dubious about this ascent, butrealized that the ladder wasn’t so bad and went for it. That was a good decisionbecause we were then able to do a loop and the trails got almost empty at thispoint. After skirting the top of a cliff with a steep dropoff on both sides, wehad a pleasant walk to South Peak and West Peak. There was even a small amountof dirt trail! The summit of South Peak was the highest point on Mount Hua, soof course we asked another hiker to take a photo of our guides and us. The viewsfrom the tops of each peak were beautiful. Mount Hua and the surroundingmountains are very rugged and remind us somewhat of hiking in the southwesternUnited States or the Sierras.
We took a route that eventually brought us to the main line returning downfrom Middle to North Peak. We were happy to have ascended each of the five peaks(petals) of Flower Mountain.
By cable car (the longest in Asia), it was just 7 minutes down to the parkentrance. We caught a shuttle bus into town, then transferred to a bus forXian.
Our guides told us that we had walked up and down a total of 4000 stairs! We were glad that we did not have this information when we started. For threedays after returning home, our sore leg muscles instructed us to take theelevator to our fifth floor apartment rather than climbing the stairs.
