In 1794, during President Washington’s second term, there was a faction ginning up support for secession. Washington recognized the threat it was…threat it posed – and he was confident that it would not succeed. He wrote in a letter, and I quote, ‘It is not difficult by concealment of some facts, and exaggeration of others to bias a well-meaning mind, at least for a while.’

But, he continued, ‘Truth will ultimately prevail where pains is taken to bring it to light.’

Now, I know the phrase ‘pains is taken’ probably just horrified every English major here. As kids, we were taught that Washington never told a lie, but they never told us he had trouble with subject-verb agreements.

There’s no silver bullet, no single formula, no reductive list. But they all seem to understand that happiness and success result from an accumulation of thousands of little things built on character, all of which have certain common features in my observation.

First, the most successful and happiest people I’ve known understand that a good life at its core is about being personal. It’s about being engaged. It’s about being there for a friend or a colleague when theyre injured or in an accident, remembering the birthdays, congratulating them on their marriage, celebrating the birth of their child. It’s about being available to them when theyre going through personal loss. It’s about loving someone more than yourself, as one of your speakers have already mentioned. It all seems to get down to being personal.

Thats the stuff that fosters relationships. It’s the only way to breed trust in everything you do in your life.

Let me give you an example. After only four months in the United States Senate, as a 30-year-old kid, I was walking through the Senate floor to go to a meeting with Majority Leader Mike Mansfield. And I witnessed another newly elected senator, the extremely conservative Jesse Helms, excoriating Ted Kennedy and Bob Dole for promoting the precursor of the Americans with Disabilities Act. But I had to see the Leader, so I kept walking.

Look, at a Gridiron Dinner not long ago, the President said, I -- the President -- “I am learning to speak without a teleprompter, Joe is learning to speak with one.” (Laughter.) But if you looked at my speechwriters, you know why.And the granddaughter of one of my dearest friends in life -— a former Holocaust survivor, a former foreign policy advisor, a former Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Congressman Tom Lantos -— is graduating today. Mercina, congratulations, kiddo. (Applause.) Where are you? You are the sixth -- she’s the sixth sibling in her immediate family to graduate from Yale. Six out of 11, thats not a bad batting average. (Laughter.) I believe it’s a modern day record for the number of kids who went to Yale from a single family.

And, Mercina, I know that your mom, Little Annette is here. I dont know where you are, Annette. But Annette was part of the first class of freshman women admitted to Yale University. (Applause.)

And her grandmother, Annette, is also a Holocaust survivor, an amazing woman; and both I’m sure wherever they are, beaming today. And I know one more thing, Mercina, your father and grandfather are looking down, cheering you on.

Over time, our great research universities drive human progress. They lay the foundation of life as it can be, more than capitalism, more than government policy. In life, personal and social ideals are everything or almost everything, and universities are all about ideas, so it works.

That is, it works provided certain conditions outside the academy are maintained. Universities are not invulnerable to the actions beyond their borders and they depend for their vitality on the societal respect for and commitment to what we do

Now, the enemies of the search for truth. What is important to realize is that the ideals that define the academy and guide the activity pursued herein, just like the primary freedoms we live in, do not come easily. They are in fact often counterintuitive. The embrace of freedom necessarily means you must accept a certain degree of unconformable disorder and even seeing chaos and sometimes unnerves the best of us.

There are many wise people who have commented on this fact of life. My favorite is a great justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., who is setting forth the first articulation of the modern first amendment jurisprudence noted that the choice the openness required for the search for truth runs against human instinct. He bluntly explained how the impulse to persecute those we disagree with is actually quote “perfectly logical, given the natural wish to believe what we want to believe.”

其实，要长篇大论地言辞说，我也不知道为什么。我就是想多为班级体做点事，多用自己的力量做出贡献。例如，上学期多次集体买书，每次总能以1元或半元的优惠拿到书。或许对于个人来说这点钱不算什么。但于我而言我觉得不论多少，那却是通过自己能力与努力为同学所省下的钱。这钱也可以拿来充班费啊。这是一种成功感。

我想我该当个实干家，不需要那些美丽的词汇来修饰。工作锻炼了我，生活造就了我。成功学家卡耐基说：“不要怕推销自己，只要你认为自己有才华，你就有资格认为自己能担任这个或那个职务。”自信是第一步，罗曼罗兰告诉我，只有你先相信自己，然后别人才会相信你。此处指的是“自信”而不是“自大”或“自恋”。我之所以今天能站在这里，大部分是源于我的自信。当然，能力也很重要，我的信心与能力永远是成正比的。

班长一职，需要较好的领导能力和责任心。

具体来说，首先最基本的是态度，在工作中敬业奉献、敢于管理、敢于负责。还要以身作则、严于律己、团结同学、平等待人。作为一个学生干部，更要的是以班集体利益为重，主动为同学服务，为老师分忧。而不能光从自己的私利出发点为学生服务。服务意思是学生干部所要具备的最基本素质，要实实在在，勤勤恳恳地，要肩负起一份责任，热爱工作，自愿牺牲一些时间和精力，坚持到底。没有责任心的干部绝对不会高效率、高质量的完成工作。

有良好的责任心与之相适应的是策划能力与协调能力。策划能力，学生干部要做到这一点首先要善于思考。学校许多重大活动都是由学生组织实施的。学生干部要思考如何开展工作，怎样才能干得更好，这样才能控制、改进和创新。其次是协调能力。这如同润滑剂一样可使你和领导、老师、同事及学生关系更融洽。要善于真心地微笑，因为这样可能会受到意想不到的效果;要虚心听取别人的意见，三个臭皮匠总胜过一个诸葛亮吧;及时帮助学生解决问题，哪怕是一件很不起眼的小事细微之处也总关情啊。

权力更是一种责任。每一个重要的职务所获得的相对权利都来自于大众的信任,所以每一个获得更多权利的人更应该看清楚的是自身所肩负的义务与使命。我竞选班长，一旦成功我必将肩负起为同学办事实谋权益的使命,做为一个班级的领头人物,必将做到慎权、慎独、慎微，自觉的接受来自各方的监督。我决不信奉“无过就是功”的信条，恰恰相反，我认为一个班干部“无功就是过”。

我将与风华正茂的同学们在一起，指点江山，发出我们青春的呼喊。当师生之间发生矛盾时，我一定明辨是非，敢于坚持原则。特别是当教师的说法或做法不尽正确时，我将敢于积极为同学们谋求正当的权益。如果同学们对我不信任，随时可以提出“不信任”提案，对我进行弹劾。你们放心，弹劾我不会像弹劾克林顿那样麻烦，我更不会死赖不走。

做班长，是一种荣誉，更是一种责任。我知道这条路上有许多挑战，但我自信我有能力担起这副担子，因为我的热情，我的毅力，我实事求是的工作态度。我知道，再多灿烂的话语也只不过是一瞬间的智慧与激情，朴实的行动才是开在成功之路上的鲜花。如果我有幸当选，我将以良好的精神状态，大胆地管理班级事务，使同学们的生活更加多姿多彩!

finally, when leaders wrap themselves in the flag, or the national anthem, and try to make you think that critics of your government don’t love and respect our country, real patriotism isn’t about honoring symbols. Real patriotism is about bringing truth to light, and when action is required, standing up and taking action.

In other words, real patriotism is about taking pains. So if you remember nothing else from today, remember that phrase. Or, to make it even simpler, just remember: T-Pain.

Graduates, as you leave this great university, I hope you will take the pains that are necessary to preserve and extend our democracy. Take pains to understand the other side. Take pains to expose lies. Take pains to reject scapegoating and xenophobia. Take pains not to fall for easy answers. And take pains to hold our leaders accountable for their words and their deeds.

If you do that, I have no doubt that truth – and America – will prevail. And my generation will be able to say, as we pass the leadership torch to yours, the same words that Washington spoke with his last breath: ‘Tis well.

So tonight, have one last drink, maybe at T’s, dance to your own beat or to the beat of Ninja Turtle Backpack Guy, and tomorrow, get to work. The world needs you more than ever.

ladies and gentlemen, good morning! i’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. man’s life is a proceof growing up, actually i’m standing here is a growth. if a person’s life must constituted by various choices, then i grow up along with these choices. once i hope i can study in a college in future, however that’s passed, as you know i come here, now i wonder what the future holds for me. when i come to this school, i told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. following i will learn to become a man, a integrated man, who has a fine body, can take on important task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job. once my teacher said :” you are not sewing, you are stylist; never forget which you should lay out to people is your thought, not craft.” i will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study, during these procei will combine learning with doing. if i can achieve this “future”, i think that i really grow up. and i deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will perfection and happy in the future. how to say future? maybe it’s a nice wish. lets make up our minds, stick to it and surely well enjoy our life.

中文大意: 女士们，先生们，上午好。我很高兴在这里为大家作一个简短的讲话。 人的一生是一个成长的过程，事实上，我现在站在这里也是一次成长。如果一个人的一生必须面临不同的选择，那么我就是伴随着这些选择成长起来的。曾经我盼望将来能上大学，然而那已经过去了，现在我在这儿，只想知道我的未来会是什么样的。 当我来到这所学校，我告诉我自己：我不久的将来都从这里开始。接着我要学习如何做人，如何做一个正直的人，并且拥有一个健康的体魄，能承担重要的任务，能独立思考，思想开放，心思缜密，有判断是非的能力，有一份不错的工作。 我的老师曾经告诉我说：“你不是在修补而是在创造;永远不要忘记你向人们所展示的是你的思想，而不是你的手艺。”我会将我的性格，兴趣爱好和能力一起融入到学习中去。在这过程中，我边学习边实践。如果我能实现这个“未来”，我就认为我真的成长了。并且我深信我的亲人，好朋友以及爱会使我的未来更完美，更幸福。 如何来解释未来呢? 也许那只是一个美好的愿望。让我们下定决心，坚持到底，那我们的人生一定能过得很精彩。

大家好！

今天我非常荣幸的站在这里竞选班长，古人云：“群龙不能无首。”我的目标就是成为这个班的首席。

是大树的，就要长得茂盛；是花儿的，就要开得鲜艳；是班长的，就要起好带头作用。

我竞选班长，是因为我从小管理能力就不错。从一年级开始，我就知道自己要整理房间，把各种各样的东西都摆放地井井有条。当爸爸妈妈的店里很忙的时候，我就会去帮忙。有时还会像个大人一样给大家分配工作，生意一个都没落下，大人们都夸我厉害。

而且我的脑子动得很快，只要一出现什么难题，脑子一咕噜一转，马上，答案就清晰可见。然后把它安排好。

同时，我也当过很多年的班长，是“老手”了，很有经验。可以更好地维持班级的秩序，更好地带领班级，管理班级。

如果我有幸当上了班长，我会让大家看到一个崭新的我，一个尽职尽责的我，一个在奋进向上的我，一个在勇往直前的我。我会以的态度管理班级，并以精神饱满的状态面对同学，帮助同学们，更会提升自己的学习情况。让我们在学习中寻找乐趣，在集体中互帮互助。

当然，我也会在老师的带领下展开各种各样丰富多彩的班队活动，让班队活动成为我们最能展现自我的舞台。并且，我会当好老师的小助手，为同学们排忧解难，积极的参加各项活动与活动的策划。我也已经回更好地完成老师教给我的任务，这是我的职责。

若是落选了，我也不会气馁，这就说明我还有一些不足之处，我将会继续完善自我。

我相信，在我们的努力之下，一定可以让班级拥有更好的辉煌历史，让班级拥有更完美的小学生活，可以让自己自豪的小学生活。希望大家能为我投上神圣而又宝贵的一票。

I wish I could do that now. And I took it with my roommate, Carrie, who was then a brilliant literary student — and went on to be a brilliant literary scholar — and my brother — smart guy, but a water-polo-playing pre-med, who was a sophomore.The three of us take this class together. And then Carrie reads all the books in the original Greek and Latin, goes to all the lectures. I read all the books in English and go to most of the lectures. My brother is kind of busy. He reads one book of 12 and goes to a couple of lectures, marches himself up to our rooma couple days before the exam to get himself tutored. The three of us go to the exam together, and we sit down. And we sit there for three hours — and our little blue notebooks — yes, Im that old. We walk out, we look at each other, and we say, "How did you do?" And Carrie says, "Boy, I feel like I didnt really draw out the main point on the Hegelian dialectic." And I say, "God, I really wish I had really connected John Lockes theory of property with the philosophers that follow." And my brother says, "I got the top grade in the class."
