I should know: In the acting business, you fail all the time.

Early in my career, I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical. A perfect role for me, I thought—except for the fact that I can’t sing.

So I’m in the wings, about to go on stage but the guy in front of me is singing like Pavarotti and I am just shrinking getting smaller and smaller...

So I come out with my little sheet music and it was “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations, that’s what I came up with.

The next part of the audition is the acting part. I figure, I can’t sing, but I know I can act.

But the guy I was paired with to do the scene couldn’t be more overdramatic and over-the top.

Suffice to say, I didn’t get the part.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t quit. I didn’t fall back.

I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition, and the next audition, and the next one. I prayed and I prayed, but I continued to fail, and I failed, and I failed.

But it didn’t matter. Because you know what? You hang around a barbershop long enough—sooner or later you will get a haircut.

You will catch a break.

Last year I did a play called Fences on Broadway and I won a Tony Award. And I didn’t have to sing for it, by the way.

And here’s the kicker—it was at the Court Theater, the same theater where I failed that first audition 30 years prior.

The point is, every graduate here today has the training and the talent to succeed.

But do you have guts to fail?

Here’s my second point about failure:

If you don’t fail… you’re not even trying.

农村中学生英语单词学习现状调查报告

一、调查目的

目前农村学校中对词汇教学不够重视，词汇教学观念陈旧，教学模式单一。主要采用传统的英语词汇教学：理解词汇，分析词性，展示例句，拓展词组，模仿背诵，造句翻译，在整个教学过程中，教师花费较多时间讲解单词用法，学生则忙于笔记而减少了思考和运用。这种教学强调了教师单方面的教，忽视了学生学习的主动性，忽视了语言能力是在使用语言的过程中培养起来的事实，使学生处于被动学习的地位，学生学习词汇很死板，不会灵活运用，也造成学生词汇学习压力大，遗忘率高和哑巴英语的窘境。面对这些现象，想通过对中学生英语词汇教学模式的研究，在英语课堂教学中，改变传统的词汇教学方法，以科学理论为依据，以学生为主体，以情境为依托，以话题为基础，以思维导图为枢纽，以运用为目的词汇教学模式，使学生能在课堂上获得较多的语言实践机会，真正在运用中轻松掌握词汇，从而提高学生的综合运用语言的能力和词汇教学的效率。为了获得词汇学习研究的事实依据，全面了解学生词汇习状况，特地进行了本次调查。

二、调查形式

本次调查主要在七，八，九每个年级中随机抽取一个班对学生进行问卷调查，围绕学生对英语词汇学习状况、方法，存在问题及对教师的教学方法提出了20个选择题和一个简答题，共发出125份问卷，收回有效份数120份。

从调查结果不难看出，学生对学习英语单词的兴趣不大，学习英语单词的方法欠缺，几乎没有自主学习单词的习惯和能力，死记硬背单词也是为了完成教师的任务或考试，完全处于被动状态。另一方面也说明教师平日对词汇教学研究不够深入，对词汇课的理解片面，认为单词就是教教读音，词义，分析词性，造句等。在这中教学模式下，学生只能成为记单词的机器和奴隶，严重违背了新课标的总目标——培养学生的综合语言运用能力。词汇教学模式改进势在必得，建议如下：

规范词汇课的教学。改变以往的词汇教学理念和方式，(1)抽早自习按单词表教教单词的读音，然后领读，跟读，记忆。(2)听力和阅读中的词汇教学，在课前一次展示出来，教读，记中文意思。(3)单元词汇复习，变成词汇听写或默写。其实，教师应该有单元词汇课，汇话课，阅读中的词汇课等规范的有系统的上好每类词汇课，每一种课型训练侧重点不同。这需要教师在单元备课上下功夫，围绕单元话题，找准中心词采取话题词汇教学。在阅读课中，以语篇情境为载体，采取思维导图的方式展开教学，培养学生的发散思维，达到词汇课的有效性。

1、全面分析，正确认识自己。

准确找出自己 的长处和短处，以便明确自己学习的特点、发展的方向，发现自己在学习中可以发挥的最佳才能。

2、结合实际，确定目标。

订计划时，不要脱离学习的实际，目标不能定得太高或过低，要依据：(1)知识、能力的实际;(2)“缺欠”的实际;(3)时间的实际;(4)教学进度的实际，确定目标，以通过自己的努力能达到为宜。

3、长计划，短安排。

要在时间上确定学习的远期目标、中期目标和近期目标。在内容上确定各门功课和各项学习活动的具体目标。学习目标可分为：(1)掌握知识目标;(2)培养能力目标;(3)掌握方法目标;(4)达到成绩(分数)目标。

长计划是指明确学习目标，确定学习的内容、专题，大致规划投入的时间;短安排是指具体的行动计划，即每周每天的具体安排和行动落实。

所谓重点：一是指自己学习中的弱科或成绩不理想的课程或某些薄弱点;二是指知识体系中的重点内容。订计划时，一定要集中时间，集中精力保证重点。

5、计划要全面，还要与班级计划相配合。

计划里除了有学习的时间外，还要有进行社会工作、为集体服务的时间;有保证睡眠的时间;有文体活动的时间。时间安排上不能和班级、家庭的正常活动、生活相冲突。

6、安排好常规学习时间和自由学习时间。

常规学习时间(即基本学习时间)：指的是用来完成老师当天布置的学习任务，“消化”当天所学知识的时间。

自由学习时间：指的是完成了老师布置的学习任务之后，所剩下的归自己支配的学习时间。在自由学习时间内一般可做两件事：补课和提高。补课是指弥补自己学习上的缺欠;提高是指深入钻研，发展自己的学习优势或特长。不管是补课还是提高，最好要围绕一个专题进行，这样做，学习比较容易见效果。

在安排计划时，不要长时间地从事单一活动。(1)学习和体育活动要交替安排。比如，学习了一下午，就应当去锻炼一会儿，再回来学习;(2)安排科目时，文科、理科的学习要错开，相近的学习内容不要集中在一起学习;(3)同一学科的材料，用不同的方法学习。

时间是宝贵的，自觉提高时间利用效率，是每个中学生学习上进行自我修养的重要内容。(1)早晨或晚上，一天学习的开头和结尾时间，可安排着重记忆的科目，如英语科等;(2)心情比较愉快，注意力比较集中，时间较完整时，可安排比较枯燥的内容或自己不太喜欢的科目;(3)零星的或注意力不易集中的时间，可安排学习自己最感兴趣的学科或做习题。这样可以提高时间的利用率。

I deeply respect and honor women who choose to work inside the home full-time to care for their families. We never want to discourage that incredible calling, but we must also ensure that every woman has the freedom to work outside of the home – if they so choose.

Therefore, in order to empower women to reach our full economic potential, we must embrace four fundamental changes that will propel us into the future.

First, as leaders in both business and government, we must pave the way in modernizing the workplace.

While the percentage of working women has dramatically increased, corporate expectations have remained all-too stagnant.

Today, in the United States, women now comprise 47 percent of the workforce.

In the vast majority of American homes with children, all parents work – and in 40 percent of households, women are the primary breadwinners.

Yet, work environments and social institutions still largely operate on a single-earner mindset, in which one parent – traditionally the mother – stays at home to provide full time care.

All too often, our workplace culture has failed to treat women with appropriate respect. This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated.

Traditional and rigid corporate culture also fails working mothers – and fathers – who work long and often wildly unpredictable hours and get little time off.

Too many mothers dread telling their boss they must stay home to take care of a sick child – and many must go back to work just weeks after having a new baby – because they can’t afford not to.

Every day, working parents are forced to make hard but unavoidable choices.

1.以让读书成为习惯为出发点，要讲求实效，按照学校读书活动实施计划的要求，扎扎实实地投入到这次规模较大的书香校园读书活动中去。

1.自购图书阅读，加强业务学习。本学年我要自己订购一种跟本学科有关的杂志《小学数学教师》，我要充分利用课余时间阅读，寻求先进的教学理念和好的教学方法，提高自己的业务素质。在读书的过程中要随时记下自己的观点和看法，所谓不动笔墨不读书，要写出反思和随笔来记录自己的收获与体会。

2。其他教师借阅或充分发挥网络资源优势，实现资源共享。除阅读自己订阅的两本书籍外，还可以借阅其他教师的教学刊物，广泛涉猎，开阔视野，不断更新原有的知识结构。另外要充分利用现有的网络资源，在网上寻找好的资源帮助学习。

3.读中外文学名著，丰富自身的文学素养名著是人类精神文明的瑰宝，平时要多阅读名著，可以提高自身的精神层面，净化自己的灵魂。本学年自购中外名著作35本，每学期精读2-3本。构建家庭书屋，倡导藏书。

4.积极参与读书交流活动，讨论读书的收获与困惑，让读书活动与课堂教学效果结合起来。

5.要求自己每天利用课余时间读书半小时以上;平时能积极参加学校举办的教师读书沙龙活动;每月上交一篇读书心得或笔记，字数不得少于500字。

6.平时要与女儿一起共读书，创造家庭读书氛围，共同养成良好的读书习惯。

That night I returned to Singapore. I didn’t think it was a big deal as my father was 73 years old at the time and old people were supposed to forgetful, until the next day when I called my mum. Over the phone she told me that on the flight to Toronto, three of them sat side byside, with my father sitting in the middle. All of a sudden, my father looked at my sister but totally couldnt recognize her, he asked my mum, "what is the name of this young lady and why is she so nice to us"? I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.

However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

Maybe this is all revelatory at Harvard. But in our part of the country, it’s not news. The slogan of the Whiteland (Indiana) High School Class of 1930 was “Grit Wins.” It could be a slogan at Purdue every year. I’m tempted to call Roget’s Thesaurus and let them know the antonym of “snowflake” is “Boilermaker.”

Just as physical strength is built through hard exercise, emotional fortitude is enhanced by adversity and conflict. Every great achievement requires a confrontation with stress, a conquest of fear. Our engineers know, there is no traction without friction. Wilbur Wright, father of the aviation world Purdue now leads, wrote, “No bird soars in a calm.” Your strength of intellect and character will give you opportunities to lead, but it will be your strength of purpose, your resilience, your grit that will enable you to lead successfully, and by your example, to give new heart and strength to those around you.

There’s one sure way to minimize stress and difficulty in life: attempt nothing that’s bold, challenge nothing that’s wrong, risk nothing that’s dangerous. Those endeavors always bring disappointment, frustration, criticism, setbacks. But they also are the source of the achievements that make life fulfilling, and the even greater grit that will get you ready for the next challenge.

From opposite ends of life’s continuum, and I offer you two closing examples of the qualities I hope you have built here at this institution. Both stories involve Purdue students even younger than you are today.

The key point is honest: Saying is nothing. Its all about acting.

In daily life, would you choose to play or to be cool, or choose to get things done? Choose to make things happen?

You must be honest to yourself and find your automatic passion. So therefore, are you willing to sacrifice all these temptations to prevent you from practicing your arts., he said.

It seems like he gambled everything hes having. The fact is that he calculated a lot, and sign a few contracts. It is to make sure his business can survive and feed him for half year.

We need to be brave to create our own business, but we also need to prepare very well, and think rationally.

Medusa is just one of many Greek myths that have encouraged me to fantasize, turning me into the creative girl I am today.

The myth talks about Poseidon, god of the sea, kissing Medusa in Athena’s temple. Athena was furious. I can picture Athena’s punishment for Medusa as if it were happening before my very eyes. The transformation from beauty to beast is as vivid and clear to me as is the light of day. The utter dread and bewilderment on Medusa’s face as she changed is unforgettable and so eerie it chills me to the bone even still.

I am Medusa, scariest of all.

Greek myths have introduced me to a brand new world where imagination is boundless.

My father values talent. He recognizes real knowledge and skill when he finds it. He is colorblind and gender neutral. He hires the best person for the job, period.Words and promises, no matter visionary they sound will only get you so far. In our business, you’re not a builder, unless you’ve got a building to show for it, or in my father’s case, city skylines. Most people strive their entire lives to achieve greatsuccess in a single industry.My father has succeeded in many on the highest level and on a global scale. One of the reasons he has thrived as an entrepreneur is because he listens to everyone. Billionaire executives don’t usually ask the people doing the work for their opinion of the work. My father is an exception.

How many times have we decided we’re against an idea before we’ve even heard it? How guilty are we of deciding “I’m against it” without even knowing what “it” is?

Many times, we know what we’re against based on who is saying it. If an idea comes from a certain public figure, politician, or media outlet, we already know how we feel. Partly this is because our public discourse has become so predictable. We’ve lost the capacity for surprise, for revelation.

Speaking of predictable, here is the moment where an ambassador of an older generation – that would be me – tells millennials – most of you – about the evils of social media! But hear me out…

Obviously, social media has transformed our lives and our relationships. It obviously has many advantages, allowing us to share news and information quickly with people around the world. But it also heightens our sense of outrage and speeds up arguments, depriving us of the time and space for careful reflection.

Bombarded with notifications, pressured to respond before the media cycle turns over, we tap out our position – our opposition – in seconds. It’s easy to be against something in fewer than 280 characters. It’s far more difficult to articulate what you are for – and to do it at warp speed.
